Utah residents t at all” and “some,” which actually means 113.0 stolen vehicles don’t have to worry much about vehicle theft – but there’s still a long way between “no per 100,000 people, according to the recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Highway Loss Data Institute (IIHS-HLDI)’s “Most-Stolen Vehicles” list. That puts our state seventh from the bottom, but still meant that 3,889 vehicles were stolen in 2024. 

There was good news (and bad news) for lovers of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The Mercedes-Benz GLC 4WD mid-size SUV was on the “Least-Stolen Vehicles” list, while the Mercedes-Benz S-Class long-wheelbase 4WD was on the “Most-Stolen Vehicles” list. Still, vehicle theft overall in Utah went down by 25%. Idaho did well, too, with 68.2 vehicles stolen per 100,000 people – 1,344 total stolen vehicles, a 14% downturn, landing Utah at #2 from the bottom of the list. 

Cities Are Hotspots

People who park on roads and streets or in parking lots and garages are more likely to be theft victims – after all, that’s where the greatest number of vehicles are located. Those are more likely to be in larger cities, too. And the thieves like to do their mischief in darkness, choosing the hours between 4 p.m. and 4 a.m. 

If your vehicle is stolen in Utah, there’s a 63% chance it will be recovered, according to the Insuredandmore.com website. That’s a lot better than the U.S. average of only 46%. Most vehicles are recovered within two days. But even if it’s returned, the vehicle is likely to be dirty, damaged and missing parts. 

Easy Ways to Combat Theft

It doesn’t take much to turn a would-be thief away from your vehicle. For example, make a habit of:

• Parking in well-lit, well-traveled areas.
• Never leaving a vehicle unlocked – thieves can swipe It in under five minutes. 
• Never leaving valuables visible.
• Never leaving your Mercedes-Benz running unattended. 

 

There are some active anti-theft measures, too:

• Steering-wheel locks and alarms that make noise and flash the lights
• Blocking mechanisms that make it hard to hotwire your vehicle
• Tracking devices connected to GPS or an app on your smart phone
