A Mercedes-Benz for a teenager? Perhaps not such a stretch if you’re a parent looking for a good – and even more important – safe used car for your teen driver. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Consumer Reports recently issued their annual list of “Safe Cars for Teenagers” and we’re happy that several pre-owned Mercedes-Benz vehicles were on it. 

The “Safest Cars for Teenagers” list was categorized based on size and type (car vs. SUV) and had some pretty tough criteria for inclusion:

• When new, the cars had to have earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ designation, which are based on multiple crash tests and strict evaluations of safety equipment.
• All had to have been manufactured after 2012, when federal regulations requiring Electronic Stability Control kicked in.
• All had to have loud and persistent warnings to buckle seat belts, since this is one area where teenagers are not always compliant.
• All had to perform well on Consumer Reports’ tests on emergency and routine handling as well as braking.
• Distracting secondary controls and displays were disqualifying.
• Very heavy, very light or vehicles too powerful for their size were omitted.

• Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2014-19; built after January 2014) – Large cars 
• Mercedes-Benz M-Class (2014-15; built after August 2013) – Midsize SUVs
