Americans honor all veterans on Veterans Day, but there’s more than we can do than just say “Thank you for your service.” Mercedes-Benz of Farmington is also supporting the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund, which provides college scholarship funding to the sons and daughters of service members who have died or been disabled in action.
Since 2014, the Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund has provided $25 million in scholarship funding to more than 4,000 students. And the help continues this year with Mercedes-Benz of the U.S.A (MBUSA) making a donation to Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund for every vehicle sold.
Johnny Mac Soldiers Fund is named after John McHugh, a 1986 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He served in the U.S. Army. He was killed May 18, 2010 in Kabul, Afghanistan – supposedly on a short visit. McHugh died when a suicide bomber drove an explosives-packed vehicle into his convoy. Johnny Mac was one of five Americans who died, along with a Canadian colonel and 12 Afghan civilians.
Col. John M. McHugh left behind five children and his wife. Johnny Mac’s West Point classmates got together to establish a fund to ensure that the children would be able to receive an education. Johnny Mac’s daughter, Kelly, graduated from Kansas State University three years to the day her father died.

Serving in the armed forces is not easy. It takes a huge level of dedication and love of country – and a willingness to risk your life to preserve our great country and its freedoms.
